“I have been an LPN for almost 11 years. And over those years, many have expressed their sincere gratitude for the care provided. However, I must say this year specifically has been most rewarding.

Working through this pandemic, we are undoubtedly living in a trying time that has challenged our need for patience, true compassion and willingness. As you know, to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, many facilities have cut off contact to families, friends, and loved ones for months on end. As a nurse, I am put to the test to stand in that gap of loneliness, sadness, and fear.

This current time that I am facing has shown me that I am more than just one who administers medications and treatments. I am a voice of reassurance when I wipe away the tears. I am an enforcer for all safety precautions to slow the spread of this virus. I am a gentle sound that’s welcomed when society screams the harshness of our reality. I am present when many loved ones cannot be. I am innovative with ways to connect families together though they cannot physically be. I am strength to many of those that feel weakened. I am a prayer of belief for those who have been afraid. I am front and center and it serves me gratification to be all of this and more.

In 2020, this pandemic has truly defined my position as a nurse. If by chance I had ever doubted my ability to fulfill the role as a great nurse, this year alone has certainly shown me that I am. In addition to that, I have been able to witness the true hearts of co-workers and staff who are the same as me. A hero to me is one who not only has the ability to do, but the heart to keep doing.

Thank you for this opportunity to share!”
